Paint scheme I'm considering for my 30k Iron Warriors.

Image

I was totally dead set on doing Alpha Legion but couldn't fit my contemptor dreads and terminators in any lists because 30k termies don't deepstrike and I'm not buying Forgeworld resin models. Looking at all the guys I have from getting two Betrayal at Calth sets and one Burning of Prospero, I think 30k is so points heavy that I can actually make both Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion.

I love this guy's color scheme.

Iron Warriors also have a Legion specific Mechanicus-built automaton with a giant storm shield and a thunder hammer without the concussion rule. At 205 points each they're an easy way to spend points so I'm going to try using scenery doors on a couple of AdMech kastelan robots with converted heads.

Well 8th ed rules will be free, you can pay for the edition with all the backstory for like $60. No thanks, I know my lore.

There's an Iron Warriors terminator lord who makes terminators troops and IW have Legion specific cataphractii who all have cyclone launchers, 295 points per 5.

I've got 3 or 4 Taurox transports for my IG storm trooper army (who are getting Greenstuff kilts and will be painted with a simple version of my family tartan) and I'm 3d printing wheels for them. The tracked sections can be reused to make Rapier weapons batteries.

I've also got 3 Rhinos still shrinkwrapped that I got for my Alpha Legion before I realized you make the whole army infiltrate. I can use them for IW with the 3 Rockgrinder plows that come on the Genestealer cult transports. They look great with chevrons so they'll look great on a Rhino.

Don't know why I'm worried about 30k when I have three armies primed and ready to paint but here I am getting "Army ADHD" and already focused on another project.

How do you get useable points if this is a table top game? I'm very confused about all of this.

You agree on a set amount of point for each side before the battle. Different types of troops have different point costs, as displayed in the Codexes (army books).

Each model represents a certain number of points, and you only have a maximum number of points to spend on building your army. I think.

Gotcha. That makes more sense. How many points do you usually get per battle, or does that vary pretty widely depending on who the players are and what kind of scenario you want to play in?

Yep. We used to play at 2000 points but that can take a couple of hours, 1500 is a nice sweet spot but the new edition is going to completely change the point values. To play 2000 point games you typically need about 3000 points worth of stuff so you can mix things around to play different styles.

I like the smaller battles even though it doesn't lend itself to balanced groups. The battles can take a long time and higher point levels, while pretty epic, are expensive and time consuming to buy/build AND play.

Any of you who still have a 360 or PS3 and want to play a video game in this universe that plays a lot like Gears of War with better melee might like this:

I have this on steam. Cannot recommend it enough even to non 40k players.

The last boss battle was a total cop out with the QuickTime fight.

I keep thinking a Dark Angels story would be awesome. The player could keep switching characters ala Gears of War and fly a landspeeder, deepstrike as a terminator, escort Asrael as a company veteran, drop in a jump chaplain, etc.

Totally, a bunch of the chapters could have solidly different feels. How about a gnarly Space Wolf game?

Oh Wolves are one of my armies and one of the armies I wanted to start in 3rd ed but they had a wonky command structure that didn't suit noobs. You had to take an HQ per 750 points and SM HQs were not great value in 3rd.

I would love another SM game where you're swap between a group of fun-loving Vikings in power armor.
