Crate train. My wife kinda works from home, she has to go make visits some days but is there a lot too. before that the dogs just had their crate. Once they are crate trained you can usually leave them in a small or specific room and they wont tear shit up when you are gone, that's what we did with the old dogs.
The crate/kennel isn't punishment or anything its their 'house' ; a safe space for them to not be bothered and rest.
They can't be trusted to not royally fuck up things outside. The doberman literally chews the boards off my gazebo. Then they work each other up into hole digging contests. So NO, they are fine in the crates.
