Is it:
1) Get out of this with taking the smallest financial hit as possible
Or
2) keep the GTI
The next steps differ depending on what he wants to achieve.

Twenty two hundred fucking posts on this issue and it still hasn’t been solved. This is DFD at its greatest.

1. The dealer keeps insisting that this fix will likely not work
2. The actual diagnostic WAS NOT PERFORMED, cylinders weren't scoped etc, as admitted by the dealer
3. Dealer keeps pushing to change the chain + head
4. This is an interference engine that experienced severe KNOCK over a prolonged period of time, since when does that mean you can just slap on a cam and call it a day?
Those are FACTs from what we already know.
I am giving my opinion here just like everyone else. I think paying the $2900 and praying that this will work is the equivalent of asking to take the wheel.
Changing a cam +HPFP alone will NOT fix this in a way that will allow him to even take it car max without someone noticing the engine is fubared, the risk is too high.
As much shit as we give Max for not wanting to modify a car, and change it from factory spec, let's think of it differently. It's probably for the best he leaves cars alone.

No way man these cars are reliable af. I have a friend I met through a forum who's mom's boyfriend has a GTI and he's got 5000 miles on it now literally nothing has broken. And my cousin's GF's mom's dog has a GTI with APR version 2.4 and it's been tuned for 2500 miles. These tunes are reliable and the GTI is reliable overall as well.fledonfoot wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 9:40 amIt doesn't matter if the car is "blacklisted" because it's out of warranty anyway.razr390 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 8:59 am
I think what Fled is saying is that 5k problems aren’t the norm but 7 year old German Cars with 70,000 miles aren’t bought used because they’re known to be “reliable”.
Then again:
1. German
2. Out of warranty.
3. Tuned (which means it was most likely blacklisted by VWOA once their Tech denied goodwill from seeing it’s tuned).
4. 70,000 miles
But yes, I don't think anyone buying a 5-7 year old GTI isn't shopping for reliability.

Your story would be funnier if you wrote “APR v2.4 and has driven it for 149 miles with no problem.”Johnny_P wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 10:55 amNo way man these cars are reliable af. Dude in my office bought a used B5 Passat with like 90k on it last year. I asked him if he realized what he bought? He says his mechanic looked it over and stuff and it's all good.
I told him the stuff to look out for but I'm not sure he's done anything like the cam follower, hpfp like crang, or carbon build up. He's hoping for another 100k. I don't want to crush his dreams.

Not in my experience.KYGTIGuy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 8:52 amAre you exaggerating? Honestly I don't know. I understand they are more maintenance entensive and some fixes will be expensive but are 5k problems a given with German cars with that millage?fledonfoot wrote: ↑Thu Apr 05, 2018 9:49 pm
Nowhere have I said it fixes the issue. It gets the car running.
The next guy that buys it deserves whatever he gets for buying a 70k 6 year old German Time Bomb without a warranty. Besides if carmax sell it , he gets a 3 month warranty from the dealer.

Will KMDbrah agree on negligence? Wrench throwing? Something else? Will he be an expert witness in the supreme court hearing next year? needs more verification that he's right.
