I voted for 9+. My 2012 Cruze was borderline with an 8.1 0-60. I was still able to manage merging and whatnot, but it did require some additional planning. Anything slower than that is downright unacceptable to me. Hell, even that Cruze was unacceptable to me.

I had a Prius for the commuter lane access before the express lane pay to use existed here. Way too much planning and still failing to pass. I never want to be in that situation again.Huckleberry wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2019 8:56 am I voted for 9+. My 2012 Cruze was borderline with an 8.1 0-60. 10-12s to 60 ain't that bad.
For modern passenger cars and personal trucks, it's unheard of, but for older cars from the 90's it's livable. Those few still trolling around.
I'd say my 2000 S-10 2.2L was dangerously slow.
You had to floor it and slam gears to hit 60 by the end of an on-ramp.
Passing? Lulz, you stuck there bro.
I ran it in the 1/4 18.3 @ 67, which means 60 happened somewhere in the 17s range.
110hp of pure 1960's 4-banger technology, plus fuel injection.
The A/C took 1/2 the Hp to run.
It barely got 24mpg.
Towing? It couldn't carry a tune.

The gas savings definitely did not outweigh the frustrations.CorvetteWaxer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2019 10:26 amI had a Prius for the commuter lane access before the express lane pay to use existed here. Even vehicles from a decade ago are noticeably slower. It's a combination of power bumps and transmissions with 8+ gears being the norm.

This is a very good point.Huckleberry wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 8:53 am Even vehicles from a decade ago are noticeably slower. It's a combination of power bumps and transmissions with 8+ gears being the norm.

So does everyone go above 65 all the sudden...Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 9:02 amThis is a very good point.Huckleberry wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 8:53 am Even vehicles from a decade ago are noticeably slower. It's a combination of power bumps and transmissions with 8+ gears being the norm.

When I had a mitsubishi mirage rental for 2 weeks, I managed to get 127 miles per tank, then 150 for the next one. In order to do 150, I have to drive like a bitch, it was terrible.Huckleberry wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 8:00 amThe gas savings definitely did not outweigh the frustrations.CorvetteWaxer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2019 10:26 am

So it was either keep up with traffic and get terrible range OR drive like a granny and get a mediocre range. Would I buy it for being economical at all cost, absolutely fucking not.

30 years ago, we were coming out of the dark ages when OEs began to figure out how to make power while meeting emissions.

I bought the Cruze because I had a hellacious commute at the time. That purchase taught me that I'm willing to sacrifice MPGs for fun, because that car was such a miserable piece of shit.MexicanYarisTK wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 12:28 pmWhen I had a mitsubishi mirage rental for 2 weeks, I managed to get 127 miles per tank, then 150 for the next one. You can still have fun with MPGs, but you have to sacrifice space. There is always a downside. Can't have everythingHuckleberry wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 2:15 pmI bought the Cruze because I had a hellacious commute at the time. I can see your point, I would've done the same. After having cars like Yaris, Civic's as rentals, I just couldn't make the advertised mpg the same way I drive my GTI in terms of my definition of "normal" driving. You have to really drive like a bitch to do so.Huckleberry wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 2:15 pmI bought the Cruze because I had a hellacious commute at the time. I may sound biased, but TDI's are best in that regard, outside of passing on highway.

What I meant was that instead of going for the Cruze's 42 MPG on the highway, I would go for the GTI's 33 and have much more fun without missing those extra nine MPGs.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 2:28 pmYou can still have fun with MPGs, but you have to sacrifice space. Can you describe the commute in regards of miles one way and where? I live in NoVa but I've driven/driven past bmore county many times. I usually end up getting 35 mpg sometimes even 37-38, and that's driving 80-sometimes 90 mph on i95Huckleberry wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 3:29 pmWhat I meant was that instead of going for the Cruze's 42 MPG on the highway, I would go for the GTI's 33 and have much more fun without missing those extra nine MPGs.

It was about 60 miles one way going from Delaware to Allentown, Pa while I looked for an apartment closer to work. Weekends were then spent in Lincoln, De, which is where I was building my GTO.MexicanYarisTK wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 4:05 pmCan you describe the commute in regards of miles one way and where?
