You gotta like it when the selection at a liquor store is a "game changer."
If he wasn't there, I would have been overwhelmed, bought something at random that I'd never heard of in my price range and went with it maybe enjoying it, maybe not.
Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough

Enjoyed some Glenfiddich 12 year that I literally found in the back of a cabinet last fall and have no recollection of where it came from. My only guess is that it was a gift for my 40th birthday that I forgot about, which would make it much, much older than 12 years now.
Almost had caramel-y undertones to me.

Does it really matter if it ages in a glass bottle? Wouldn't this allow the cork to dry out, letting air in?[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:09 am Along with that, NEVER store whisky on its side. Upright with no contact with the cork, only.
I thought that was why wine bottles were stored with a slight downward tilt. I am no sommelier.

[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:19 amThe alcohol content of whiskey is too high and will eat the cork. I have one that was stored on its side for a couple years before I got it and you can see the cork is starting to degrade. The wax or plastic seal should keep the cork in good condition for several decades.
Wine, side.
Whisk(e)y, upright.
Thanks for the early morning education

Just about every whiskey in the last many years uses a synthetic cork. Should not be a problem.Apex wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:17 amWouldn't this allow the cork to dry out, letting air in?[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:09 am Along with that, NEVER store whisky on its side. Once it is in the bottle there is no more charred wood, or previously used wood from the barrel in in contact with the whiskey, so it won't "age" anymore.

Yeah, some guys warn about keeping a bottle that has been opened for any amount of time as it will change the flavor. I haven't seen that happen and I've had a bottle of Macallan 25 that was opened and let sit in the cabinet for a couple years before killing the bottle. When I went back to it it was exactly as I remembered it.[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:32 am Plus it takes way more air and time for whisky to oxidize than wine.
Maybe if you had a bottle with a spout in it at a bar, yeah.. if it's corked though, I don't see a difference.

Glass corked decanter - one year
Corked bottle less than half full - two years
Corked bottle more than half full - three to five years
It will still be fine after those moments but you'll start to notice a change.
I think the urgency some people put on the bottle once it is opened is a lot of FUD, or information passed to make us drink faster and buy more. Not that there's anything absolutely wrong with that..

It's been standing up the whole time it was in my possession. None of my booze bottles are on their side, except my wine.[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 9:09 am Along with that, NEVER store whisky on its side. Upright with no contact with the cork, only.

But guyz, we're burying the lead here.
I found a full, never-opened bottle of Glenfiddich in the back of one of my a liqueur cabinets. Granted, it's not a terribly expensive bottle of scotch, but it was still a surprise and I really am where it came from or how long I've had it, though it had to be several years at the very least.

Even a bottle of Jack Daniels found that was not expected is a great surprise, so yeah, you definitely won with that find.wap wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 10:07 am But guyz, we're burying the lead here.
