I need to charge my bike light. For night time :stig: on Wednesday I think. Rained today and yesterday, the trails will be a mess but should be good Wednesday. I could brap with @dgriff then.

Brapped last night. :fuckyeah:

The rain we got on Monday washed all the dust and top layer of silt away, so there's a ton of traction (when you're not on leaves, lol). Belmont was brappalicious last night as a result.
Route was:
420 clockwise from the trailhead https://www.strava.com/segments/1171000
Cabbage patch from trailhead to kitchen sink https://www.strava.com/segments/1224254 to https://www.strava.com/segments/11596851
New trail to the flow trail up the hill https://www.strava.com/segments/14825068
Sampler to the top of the ridge https://www.strava.com/segments/14765843
Rode to Ford Rd and hopped into Wild Mouse and then took that to Mouse Trap https://www.strava.com/segments/14819987 (reversed) to https://www.strava.com/segments/9259454
Four Bridges down the hill back to the trailhead https://www.strava.com/segments/8348664

Sampler kicked my ass. I couldn't see shit back there, it's the thickest part of Belmont and challenging during daylight. Also by the time I got to the mouse trail I was pretty whooped so I gave up trying to ride over the bigger logs.

Also, last night I saw about 6 deer, one being a 4-point buck (rode through their group, lawl, deer are freaky fuckers at night), a feral cat, and a bat. :notbad: Also ran into my buddy Josh on the trails. He was lost, lol.

Bike is broken. It's clunking something awful on the rear. IDK what it is, maybe the hub? Or it's the fork/headset and the clunk is just resonating through the frame. Threw the chain about 5 times last night, too.

Test rode a pair of Fathoms yesterday. The only Fathom 1 was a large, but I wanted to get a feel for the component spec. The 1x SLX drivetrain is slick and the dropper was surprisingly nice for a budget bike, but I'm a bit :notsure: about the Suntour fork. I know the new ones are supposed to be better, but it definitely didn't feel as smooth as the Fox 32 on the Orbea. Maybe it'd be fine :iono:.

They did have a medium Fathom 2. Lower spec, but fit me perfectly. Handling is sooooo much better than Orbea, just easily leans over, felt very nimble, and the 780mm bar/50mm stem combo is money.

Chance of dropping the coin on a Trance Advanced 2 is somewhere between slim and none, and not sure the alloy Trance 2 is the way I want to go. I love how light the Fathoms are. Should probably wait until spring, but I want to go riding RIGHT meow.

The Fathom 1 is worth the extra cost (MSRP) over the 2.
-SLX will last and the 1x setup is pretty great. Deore 2x9 is just way outdated anymore.
-The forks are both :flaccid: BUT the 1 has a 15mm through axle where the 2 has a 9mm QR. While that might not mean much since the fork is meh regardless, it means you'll need to buy less shit (front wheel or hub) when you eventually swap it out for a Revelation or Fox34 like God intended.

But if you get a good deal on the 2, like a few hundo off.... you can buy an SLX drivetrain for peanuts, buy a front wheel for cheap on fleabay, and buy the fork.... and maybe all that would come in less than the cost of the 1 but essentially be a better build. See what they'll sell it for.
$225 for SLX drivetrain http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/e ... prod148625
$110 for used Stans BOOST front wheel https://www.ebay.com/itm/Stans-NoTubes- ... SwIyNZ4nEI
$400 Fox34 Factory Kashima :jizz: 120mm BOOST used https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fox-Factory-Ka ... SwuOxZ18Fk

So... $735 upgrade. If you can get the "2" for $200 off I'd say do it and upgrade the parts to something like this (or a bit lower spec I guess on the fork and wheel) and shred.

That is a killer looking frame. $550 apparently. Pair that with a Revelation in 130mm travel, some china carbon wheels, and SLX.... unf :fap: :fap: :fap:

Why does every manufacturer insist on painting their shit fucking matte colors anymore? I do not understand this. The FS Giants look horrible in matte. This looks fucking rad as hell in gloss purple.

Oh I'd definitely get the 1, I just wanted to hop on a medium for sizing purposes. BGI actually had one in stock, but the salesbroette said it's either being built right now or in the warehouse.

Even with the 1 I might still just upgrade the fork from the jump, though. That Fox 34 Factory :jimp:. Jenson also has the regular 2017 Float 34 on sale for cheap.

Fox forks have a 44mm offset, the Suntour is 42mm. Think that'd make much difference?

Should be fine. That's a nice fork. The GRIP damper is alright but the Fit4 is noticeably smoother. I thought the Revelation (current model year) was better than both but that's because it's basically a Pike with fewer adjustment points. Honestly though you can't go wrong. Might as well just ride it with the Suntour fork and if you want to upgrade later on go for it. Keep in mind the "1" is not BOOST, so you'd be buying a wheel if you bought that fork. Or maybe just adapters, I dunno. The spec on the "1" is 15x100 front axle.

Probably the smartest idea. I'm just ready to shred some trails on a more capable bike and I'm sure even with the Suntour I'll have a ball.

Gents, on the subject of forks... how often do y'all perform maintenance on yours?

IIRC I looked mine up and they recommend rebuilding every 100 hours or something ridiculous like that...

Yearly or if you don't ride much every second year for fox forks. Seals and fluid.

:word:

That makes more sense, 100 hours of riding is very frequently and I don't even ride that much.

Yeah it's a bit nuts. If every ride is 2 hours that's only 50 rides. You'd surpass that with 2-3 rides a week during spring summer fall.
My fork could use a rebuild.

Just don't go more than 2 years. The Fox seals pretty much suck. Also, don't replace with Enduro seals. They're worse, as they stick a lot more than the already sticky factory seals. Just replace with factory shit.

There's still enough time to not buy a bike for Sunday.
